A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FOUNDER OF DARUL ULOOM NEWCASTLE
THE EARLY LIFE OF MOULANA SEMA SAHEB (R.A)
As an educationalist with a holistic, Islamic approach, Moulana Cassim Mohammed Sema (R.A), a person who has dedicated his life to the upliftment of Islam. He was born on 12th May 1920 ( Ramadhaan 1338 ). At the tender age of 5 he started his secular and Islamic studies. It was at the request of Moulana Mia Saheb (R.A) of the Waterval Islamic Institute to study Islamic studies in India, when he visited Newcastle in 1935. Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) had a choice to either become a medical doctor or an Aalim and he chose the latter. 
 
DEPARTURE TO INDIA
Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) left for Durban with his father on 23rd September 1935. He waited for a few days for the ship and then departed to India after an emotional farewell. After a tiresome journey, Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) arrived in India on 23rd October 1935. Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) completed the 2 year course in one year, studying the Urdu & Persian languages which he attained first position. Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) began his Arabic classes thereafter.

– Hazrat Moulana Idris Saheb (R.A)
– Hazrat Moulana Amrohi Saheb (R.A)
– Hazrat Moulana Qari Mohammed Yamin Saheb (R.A)
– Hazrat Moulana Mohammed Akhalwaya Saheb (R.A)
– Hazrat Moulana Ahmed Noor Saheb (R.A)
 
Moulana Amrohi Saheb (R.A) was the Grand Muhaddith of the time who taught Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) Bukhari & Muslim Sharief when he was in his nineties. Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) had one of the shortest Sanads (the direct link to the Prophet (S.A.W) via ones teachers). This is one of the reasons why people from far and wide come to Darul Uloom Newcastle to complete their studies. Hazrat Moulana Cassim Mohammed Sema Saheb (R.A) graduated as an Aalim from Jam’iah Islamiyyah Dhabel in September/October 1942 at the young age of 22. Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) also studied a course in Ifta.
 
FIRST MEETING BETWEEN MOULANA SEMA SAHEB (R.A) AND MOULANA ELIAS SAHEB (R.A)
Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) travelled 1000 miles from Dhabel to Delhi to meet Moulana Elias (R.A). Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) saw Moulana Elias Saheb (R.A) sitting under a tree. After meeting Moulana Elias Saheb (R.A), Moulana Elias Saheb (R.A) began speaking to him about the importance of Tabligh.
 
SECOND MEETING BETWEEN MOULANA SEMA SAHEB (R.A) AND MOULANA ELIAS SAHEB (R.A)
Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) travelled alone to Nizamuddeen in the late afternoon in time for Asr prayers. He joined the congregation for his prayers which, was led by Hazrat Moulana Mohammed Elias Saheb (R.A) himself. Thereafter, Moulana Elias Saheb (R.A) sat in the courtyard with 2 young Aalims. Here Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) advised Moulana Elias that he would like to take Bay’at on his hand.( ie. To become his Murid). Moulana Elias Saheb (R.A) refused, saying he would like Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) to spend seven chillas ( 7 X 40 days ) in Jamaat first.
 
MOULANA SEMA SAHEB’S (R.A) RETURN HOME
Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) left on the 28th January 1944 and reached Durban Harbour on 5th February 1944.
 
AN EPITOME OF HUMILITY
Without an iota of doubt Hazrat Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) was one of the greatest ulama that treaded the soils of South Africa, a visionary and a Mujaddid ( reformer ) of the 3rd century of Islam in South Africa.

– First Tablighi Ijtima
– Jamiatul Ulama Natal
– Madaaris of our country
– Dawat to the indigenous people
– The first Darul Uloom in South Africa
– Teaching of Qur’an and hadith
– Translating Qur’an in Zulu

Moulana Sema Saheb (R.A) passed away on 9 June 2007 (23rd Juma-dhul-Ula 1428). He was 87 years old.
